Chemical Safety Laboratory Specific Training
In order to comply with the OSHA Occupational Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals in Laboratories (29 CFR 1910.1450) regulations, laboratory specific training must be performed for every laboratory worker, either by the Principal Investigator listed as the Approval Holder (AH) for the laboratory (or set of laboratories), or the Approval Safety Coordinator (ASC), if designated. This training, and the completion of this form, is required in addition to the General Chemical Safety Training and must be retained in the laboratory for inspection.

- Hazardous gases must be stored in the gas bunker outside or in one of the approved gas cabinets in the chase.
- Designated areas present in the laboratory:
- Particularly hazardous gases are kept in gas cabinets located in the chase while in use, or chained in the gas bunker when not in use. Do NOT work on gas cabinets yourself. Contact MNFC staff for help or if there are alarms.
- The acid bunker is room 213F
- The caustic/base bunker is room 213D
- The solvent bunker is room 213E

-
-
When dispensing Liquid Nitrogen from the building dewar, you must wear:
-
Face Shield
-
Temperature resistant gloves
-
Apron
-
- General cleanroom attire must be worn inside of the cleanroom. They are provided in the gowning room and consist of:
- See the figure in Appendix A for the location of first aid kits
- See the figure in Appendix A for the location of chemical spill kits. Instructions for use are located inside of each chemical spill bucket.
- See the figure in Appendix A for the location of safety showers and eye wash stations.
- Acid and base waste can be diluted and poured down the drain.
- Solvent waste must be disposed of using the provided containers next to the fume hoods. The waste container has a tag which must identify the waste. If your waste is not already listed on the tag, write the name of your waste on the tag.
- See the figure in Appendix A for the location of fire extinguisher(s) and emergency exit(s).
- Have someone who has taken the “Fighting Fires with Portable Fire Extinguishers” training explain how to properly use fire extinguishers, or require all workers to complete online “Fire Safety Awareness” UAccess Training.
- Storage and segregation of hazardous chemicals.
- Engineering Controls
- Proper use of chemical fume hoods:
- The proper level of the sash is marked on the fume hood. Do NOT raise the sash higher than the indicated safe level line when in use.
- When using the fume hood, wear proper attire:
- Face Shield
- Chemically resistant apron
- Chemically resistant gloves
- Additional engineering controls present in the laboratory (gas cabinets, shields, gas effluent scrubbers, alarms, shut-offs).
- Gas cabinets are used to hold gas tanks of flammable, toxic, pyrophoric and hazardous gases which are plumbed to process equipment in the cleanroom.
- Users are not to work on gas cabinets, except under supervision of the cleanroom staff.
- If a gas cabinet alarms, notify cleanroom staff immediately.
- Proper use of chemical fume hoods:
- Additional Safety Information
- In case of an emergency: CALL 911 to contact The University of Arizona Police Department (UAPD)
- The following emergency equipment is available in the laboratory for laboratory workers to use if they are appropriately trained:
Emergency Equipment | Location(s) |
Fire Extinguisher | See graphic in Appendix A |
First Aid Kit | See graphic in Appendix A |
Chemical Spill Kit | Next to Eyewash Stations in Cleanroom and in Chase |
Emergency Eye Wash | See graphic in Appendix A |
Emergency Safety Shower | See graphic in Appendix A |
- For Chemical spill:
- Obtain a chemical spill kit located next to the showers inside the cleanroom and in the chase
- Put on appropriate PPE
- Contain the spill.
- Notify the cleanroom staff
- For Chemical Exposure
- Call 911 if a laboratory worker is exposed to a hazardous chemical and requires immediate medical attention. Perform first aid assistance described in Section 8.4 of the UCHP if you’ve been appropriately trained, and it is safe to do so. Notify the cleanroom staff or Greg Book at (520) 626-1524 or Anthony Muscat at (520) 621-6162 as soon as is practical. Inform the Research Laboratory & Safety Services and Risk Management Services of all chemical exposures.
- If the chemical exposure does not require immediate medical attention, but the laboratory worker feels unwell, he/she should call the Arizona Poison & Drug Information Center at 520-626-6016 for further information and recommendations.
- Liquid Chemical Exposure First Aid Assistance
- Remove affected clothing immediately
- Wash affected body area with plenty of water (eye rinse station, showers). Use Calcium Gluconate gel for HF exposure
- Leave the facility
- Seek medical attention
- Notify your supervisor and an MNFC Staff member
- Gas Chemical Release
- Leave the area immediately. If you are in the cleanroom, leave with your cleanroom suit on. Do not stop to de-tog. Suits will be collected outside.
- Exit the building via the evacuation route posted in the cleanroom gowning room and at each entrance to the Lab areas
- Pull the nearest fire alarm on your way out
- Assemble at the ECE Building South Entrance emergency gathering point
- Call 911 using any available phone
- Notify your supervisor and an MNFC Staff member
- Fire or Explosion
- In the case of an explosion or fire in the laboratory, assist any person in immediate danger if it can be accomplished without risk to you. Immediately evacuate the area and call 911 from a campus phone, or call 911 from a non-campus phone and mention the incident is on the UA campus. If an alarm is not yet sounding, activate the fire alarm system by pulling a manual fire alarm pull station and meet your fellow laboratory workers at the pre-determined destination.
- If the fire is relatively small and contained, and a laboratory worker has been appropriately trained on the use of a fire extinguisher, he/she may attempt to extinguish the fire, following the instructions in Section 8.3 of the UCHP.
- Keep calm
- Leave the area immediately. If you are in the cleanroom, leave with your cleanroom suit on. Do not stop to de-tog. Suits will be collected outside.
- Exit the building via the evacuation route posted in the cleanroom gowning room and at each entrance to the Lab areas
- Pull the nearest fire alarm on your way out
- Assemble at the ECE Building South Entrance emergency gathering point
- Call 911 using any available phone
- Notify your supervisor and an MNFC Staff member
- Explain any procedures requiring prior approval from the AH or ASC
- Any chemicals not listed in the Laboratory Chemical Hygiene plan require approval by the AH before bringing into the MNFC
- Any visitors require approval by the AH before being allowed to enter the MNFC
- Explain any special procedures that occur in the laboratory.
- All equipment in the MNFC requires specific training. Usage is not allowed without training. Trying to defeat the interlocks will result in expulsion from the MNFC until adequate retraining is conducted and approval is given by the AH.
